Well, that is certainly a thing.

I don’t know if the custom bellhousing on this Unimog is as sketchy as it looks, but it looks really sketchy.

From what I can see inside the bellhousing, it looks like they are seriously lacking in penetration on those welds.

Maybe that was an in progress shot? Seems like a weird picture to include given how bad it looks.

It gets worse. The engine on a 404 is supported largely by the bellhousing. If there are any structural deficiencies in all that, the engine could literally fall out (!).

It’s a thing until it shatters into about 18 smaller things.

Dear Lord, it’s the tiffany lampshade of bellhousings.

I don’t know if these things have a habit of breaking bellhousings, but if they do, then a custom piece might be an upgrade. But you’re right- the penetration on those welds makes me nervous. I’m not convinced that this is as badass as it could be.

Good thing that picture was included, though. There’s no mention of it in the description.

It says former German army firetruck. Given the age and that bell-housing, I can only assume it was East German.

I guess that’s one way to make a custom bell housing

It looks terrible, but it’s probably fine. Of course, if the welds are crap it’s not fine. But, assuming the welds are good, that’s a lot of steel supporting a couple hundred pounds of not very powerful engine.
